What is the purpose of eavestroughs?

An eavestrough is a channel that goes around the perimeter of the roof of a building and collects rainwater that comes down from the roof. This channel sends the collected rainwater into the downpipes or downspouts that empty into a drainage system. Notably, eavestroughs are also capable of collecting melting snow from the roof of a house. Other names for an eavestrough include surface water collection channel, roof gutter, and rain gutter.

As a homeowner, you might have been advised to install eavestroughs in your home. So, this leads you to ask about the essence of eavestroughs. In general, eavestroughs have varying benefits that will be described below.

·       They improve the efficiency of a water drainage system

Rain and snow are bound to fall on the roof of your home. But when they run down from the roof, where will they go to? Unfortunately, they will splash on your walls and leave muddy and dirty marks on them. Even when melted snow and rainwater get on the ground, they can erode the outermost layer of the soil. Over time, this will lead to oversaturation of soil that can cause structural damages to your home.

Luckily, you don’t have to get worked up over these issues as you can install eavestroughs to collect rainwater and melted snow and send them into a drainage system. This secures your home and gives you peace of mind.

·       They prevent yard flooding

High rainfall and melted snow are capable of overloading your yard with lots of water. Of course, this can happen at different seasons of the year. So, you must prepare for the possibility of yard flooring by installing eavestroughs in your building. This system will ensure easy drainage and prevent your yard from being flooded.

·       They prevent roof rotting

If melted snow is not drained properly, some residues will be left on your roof. Some of the residues may go under the roof shingles and cause standing water. Over time, this will start making the shingles, fascia, soffit, and other parts of your roof rot. Unfortunately, this can result in roof failure.

To prevent roof rotting, you only need to install eavestroughs that will make sure the melted snow is drained efficiently. Sunlight will dry the roof and prevent it from rotting.

·       They prevent damages to your building

As indicated above, an inefficient drainage system can cause roof rotting, yard flooding, and oversaturation of soil. All these problems have been associated with structural damages that can extend to various parts of your home. This means that if you want to repair the damages caused by the inefficient drainage system, your roof is not the only part that will be repaired. Imagine how much it would cost you to repair the damages caused.

But you don’t need to deal with all these problems as you can just install eavestroughs. A properly installed eavestrough will increase the efficiency of your drainage and prevent costly repairs.

Now, you understand the purpose of eavestroughs. Therefore, don’t wait until your building is exposed to various problems before installing this surface water collection channel.
