What are the Types of Roof Materials?

As technology improves, lots of roof manufacturers are making different types of roof materials. So, if you are thinking about getting a roof for your building, you have a wide range of options to consider. Unfortunately, the availability of several options can be quite confusing for lots of individuals that don’t know anything about the types of roof materials.

What are the different types of roofing materials? What are the features, pros, and cons of each type? Let’s look at the various types of roof materials available in the market today.

  • Metal roofing

Metal roofing looks like slate, tile, and shake because of its vertical panels or shingles. However, it is quite different from these other types of roofing materials. If maintained properly, metal roofing can be used for around 60 years as it can withstand high windows, heavy rain, snow, and lots more.

Comparatively, metal roofing is affordable. It tends to be cheaper than concrete tiles but costlier than asphalt. However, corrosion and dents can affect this type of roof material.

  • Wood shingles and shakes

If aesthetics is an important factor to you, wood shingles are a great choice for you. Although they are not the most durable roofing materials, they can last for about 25 to 40 years. Generally, wood shingles and shakes are fire-resistant, strong, and beautiful.

However, you should understand the type of wood used for making them can determine their quality. Notably, the most common trees for making wood shingles include redwood, pine, red cedar, and cypress. Regardless of the type of tree used, professional installation and regular maintenance are needed to prevent early rot, premature decay, and pest infestation.

  • Asphalt shingles

For those living in areas with extreme environmental conditions, asphalt shingles are always an exceptional option. Besides, this type of roof material doesn’t cost a lot of money to install or maintain. However, asphalt shingles can only last for around 20 years; hence, you may need to replace them twice or thrice before replacing other types such as metal roofing.

  • Slates

Slates are another wonderful option you can consider when looking for roofing materials. They are one of the most durable options as they can be used for over 100 years and are recommended for wet climates. Also, slate is waterproof and can resist fire, fungus, and mould.

Nonetheless, slates come with some cons. Firstly, they are expensive to install. Additionally, they break easily when walked on.

  • Clay and concrete tiles

Like asphalt shingles, clay and concrete tiles are great for regions that experience lots of strong winds, hurricanes, and tornadoes. They are also long-lasting but are not strong enough to withstand lots of weight. So, you should avoid walking on them if you don’t want them to break.

  • Stone-coated steel

As long as the affordable type of roofing materials is concerned, stone-coated steel is a nice choice. It is not easily damaged by winds, wildfires, heavy rains, or hail. Also, it is good for regions with wet climates and can last for several decades.

Other types of roof materials you can use for your home or business include rubber slates, solar tiles, and green roofs.
